I remember Professor- Brady explaining
the many forms of oppression and the cruel treatment displayed by
society. An example of disenfranchisement she explained, was how
people attend a country club and are unaccepting to outsiders. Real
life situations just as this continue to happen today. It is crazy to
think how individuals are continuously being oppressed and
marginalized for being who they are. There are four main institutions
such as government, family, religion, and education where inequality
takes place. This is significant so that individuals may open their
eyes to how they treat others. Whether it is because of their
differences such as race gender, social status, etc.
Poetry-
We learned the many techniques seen in
poetry. Such as alliteration, tone, mood, setting, and theme.
Although, what I liked most about this lecture was how poetry was to
be heard and not read. We compare poetry (even from hundreds of years
ago) to rap songs and it still relates! Human behavior consists of
numerous emotions that are overwhelming. I enjoyed how the whole
class got to participate in reading many poems.
Interpreter of Maladies-
I enjoyed this lecture because so many themes that I was unaware of were brought out. Also, because we were outside as a class it made free thinking a lot easier! When I first read this story, it was hard for me to break down. The theme that I appreciated the most was how expectation in our life can cause someone to have such huge fear in life. Also, how lack of communication can so drastically effect someone
This is my freshmen year in college. I
can truly say having Professor Mignano- Brady as my English Professor
this year has influence me so greatly. I have come across so many
teachers in my life that are uninteresting, boring, or (visually
assuming) that they just do not like coming to work. Unalike these
people, Professor Brady has truthfully made me want to put my phone
away in class, want to write my papers, and want to attend her class.
Her creativity and emphasis should be a goal for everyone teaching in
a classroom.
English 102 this semester for me was
never boring and drastically differed from all of my other courses in
the most positive way to be said. I feel as if I have advanced as a
writer, thinker, and person in general. I loved participating in
class and being able to freely interact and intelligently analyze
literature with my classmates together.
From class outside to having critical
debates in our panels, I can honestly tell you I will remember this
class as it has improved myself as a student but young adult as-well!
One may believe that word “love” withholds a one sided definition. The usual believed standards for obtaining love consist of having “butterflies”, passion, romance, travel, and an easygoing lifestyle. Despite this, the concept of love contains endless factors and aspects than one could ever imagine. There are magnificent moments that a couple may share, yet there are sad and tragic things that occur in life as-well. Emotions such as despair, hatred, loss, jealousy, and fear are bound to arise. This may bind two closer together in which further add to the strength of love present. However, these moments may also tear that tightly kindled relationship past the breaking point leading one to fall out of love. In modern-day, society is enabled to analyze and make a connection to the theme and tone displayed in music, and relate the lyrics to numerous forms of poetry. Within the selected song and poems chosen, they all convey the hardships of love with individuals expressing themselves due to their pain caused by love.
Demonstrated in the song, “Love The Way You Lie,” by Eminem, ft. Rhianna, there is a recognizable tone and mood. Instead of their love being appreciated with the specifics of the good factors in their relationship, the rapper goes on about the build up of hatred he has generated towards his girlfriend. The couple continues to argue which is physical and violent sometimes, yet they continuously make up and get over their differences because of their desperation of needing one another. Describing the tone, many emotions stand out such as anger, aggression, remorse, and sadness as well. There are numerous examples in the lyrics to indicate this tone portrayed. For example, “I apologize even though I know it's lies, I'm tired of the game, I just want her back, I know I'm a liar, if she ever tries to f**ing leave again, I'ma tie her to the bed and set this house on fire” (Verse 3, 15-18). One may infer that this relationship consists of dominancy, control, desperation, and denial, for they both end up together despite their differences. Lastly, they both acquire the inability to admit their wrongful actions.
In the poem “Coldness in Love”, written by D.H Lawrence, some of the same aspects in the song are seen here as-well. The tone contains a gloomy and dull rhythm with the setting on a beach. The author keeps referring to the dark skies, coldness of the water, and other things turning the beach into an unpleasant place to be. How the narrator is feeling is comparable to this setting. Usually, the beach is a favorable place to visit. Despite this, the theme of fear and hurt over a loved one can be visualized by the description of the beach and relating it to how the narrator is feeling. Stated in the poem, “But still to me all evening long you were cold, And I was numb with a bitter, deathly ache; Till old days drew me back into their fold, And dim hopes crowded me warmth with companionship” (Verse 4, 1-4). This statement can be comparable to the song described. Both of these individuals claim how they contain a bitter and hurtful relationship but the love filled with memories comfort them in their time of disparity. This enables them to keep holding on even though they are exposed to such pain.
Lastly, the last poem named “I Do Not Love Thee, by Sarah Norton, indicates a similar concept to the first poem and song previously described. In this piece, a significant message is exposed by how the author talks about the specific individual in the text. Repetition is a device applied that actually adds to the contradiction of what she is claiming! By stating she does not love the other person, she also goes on to account all the things that are favored about this person. Stated, “I do not love thee!- yet, when thou art gone, I hate the sound ( though those who speak be dear) Which breaks the lingering echo of the tone, Thy voice of music leaves upon my ear” (Verse 3, 1-4). This is similar to the song and other poem due to the fact that the narrator is openly saying that she doesn't love the other individual but deep down their presence is really the “music” to her ears! Although she will not admit it, the inner feelings she is encountering are eating her alive as she has to confront her solitude and passion for the individual whom she loves.
